About the Dyett Hunger Strike:
Support the Hunger Strike for the Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology High School
Their demand is simple. Rahm Emanuel and his appointed school board needs to follow the community’s wishes and use the now shuttered Dyett High School Building at 555E 51st St. for the innovative, academically excellent and culturally connected Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology High School.
About the Art Created:
In her book, Art As A Way Of Knowing, Pat Allen describes paint as, “Feelings liquified” and describes painting as an act that “allows feelings to become visible through color”. These brushstrokes embody the beauty and strength inherent in creating art. Since this art installation was create during the Dyett Hunger Strike, by the children whose adult was either a hunger striker or supporter of the hunger strikers, these brush strokes also, embody the beauty and strength inherent in creating justice and equality. The art installation was built and rebuilt throughout the thirty-four days of the hunger strike for Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology. We asked for people to add their voice by writing on post-its and attaching them to the sculpture.
